Weight management for overweight pets
The health risks for overweight cats and dogs are serious and every pet owner should be aware of them.
Some of the more common consequences of obesity include:
- Osteoarthritis – ~¼ of overweight dogs will develop serious joint complications.
- Diabetes mellitus
- Heart disease and increased blood pressure
- Difficulty breathing – this occurs due to additional fat in the chest constricting full expansion of the lungs
- Decreased stamina and exercise intolerance
- Heat intolerance
- Impaired liver function – excess fat is stored in the liver resulting in a condition called hepatic lipidosis. This is especially common in overweight cats.
- Increased risk of ‘slipped discs’ especially in certain breeds of dogs like Daschunds.
- Decreased quality and length of life
